💧 Core Principle: Keep the Caudex Mostly Exposed
The single most important rule for soil cultivation is that the caudex must not be buried deeply. In its native habitat, the tuber sits at or above ground level. Burying it completely traps moisture against the surface and causes rot. Only the bottom portion should be in the soil, with the top one-third to one-quarter exposed to air.
🪴 Soil and Pot Selection
Stephania requires extremely well-drained, sandy soil. Use a cactus or succulent mix, or blend your own with plenty of perlite, pumice, or grit. A common recipe is 3 parts nutrient soil + 2 parts leaf mold + 3 parts furnace slag or similar gritty material. Choose a pot with drainage holes, and terracotta is ideal because it breathes and dries faster than plastic. A shallow, wide pot works well for showing off the caudex.
🌱 Planting Steps
Prepare the caudex: Rinse it clean and let it dry for 1–2 hours. If the tuber is firm and healthy, no further treatment is needed.
Fill the pot: Add soil to about two-thirds of the pot, optionally mixing in a slow-release fertilizer at the bottom.
Position the caudex: Place it on top of the soil with any buds or growth points facing upward. The top of the tuber should remain above the soil line.
Cover lightly: Add just enough soil to cover the bottom quarter of the caudex, leaving the rest exposed. Press the soil gently to secure the plant.
First watering: Water thoroughly once to settle the soil, then place the pot in a bright, airy spot.
☀️ Light and Watering
Stephania prefers bright, indirect light with maybe one or two hours of gentle morning or late-afternoon sun. Avoid harsh midday sun, which scorches the leaves. During the growing season (roughly May–October), water only when the soil is completely dry—lift the pot; if it feels light, it’s time to water. Water thoroughly until it drains, then let it dry out fully again. Overwatering is the number one killer.
💤 Dormancy Care (Winter)
When leaves yellow and drop in autumn, the plant is entering dormancy, not dying. Stop watering almost entirely. The caudex stores enough water to survive months without any. Only if the tuber becomes severely shriveled should you give a light misting or a tiny sip of water. Keep it in a cool, dry place above 10°C and away from cold windows. Most winter deaths come from well-meaning watering.
📝 Summary
Growing Stephania in soil is about restraint: plant the caudex shallow in gritty, fast-draining soil, water only after the soil dries completely, give bright indirect light, and completely stop watering once the leaves drop for winter. It is a slow, deliberate plant that rewards patience. If you can resist the urge to water during its bare-bulb months, it will send up a fresh vine every spring for many years.
