Description

🧅 Bulb Preparation and Disinfection
After receiving the bulb, first trim off dried, blackened old roots, but keep the healthy white fleshy roots—cutting these will delay flowering that year. Peel away the dry brown outer scales. If you spot red spots or wounds, soak the bulb in a carbendazim or chlorothalonil solution (1:800 dilution) for 10–15 minutes, then let it air-dry before planting.

🪴 Shallow Planting (The Core Rule)
Amaryllis must be planted shallow. One-half to one-third of the bulb should remain above the soil surface. Burying it completely leads to water accumulation and rot, and deep planting often results in no flowers. Choose a breathable terracotta or gallon pot about twice the bulb’s diameter, with drainage holes at the bottom. For soil, use peat moss : perlite : coarse coconut coir = 3:2:1 in rainy southern climates, or leaf mold : garden soil : river sand = 2:2:1 in dry northern climates.

💧 Watering Rhythm: Better Dry Than Wet
Water thoroughly once after planting, then keep the soil only slightly moist before sprouting—avoid frequent watering. During the growing season, follow the “soak and dry” rule: water only when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry, pouring slowly around the pot’s edge. Never pour water into the bulb’s center, or rot will follow. The bulb stores about 80% of its water, giving it decent drought tolerance—overwatering is far more dangerous than underwatering.

✂️ Post-Bloom Bulb Care: Cut the Flower, Keep the Leaves
After blooms fade, cut only the spent flowers and let the stalk wither naturally (the stalk is hollow, so cutting it at the base invites water accumulation and rot). The leaves must be kept for photosynthesis to rebuild the bulb—stop watering only after they yellow naturally. Apply a compound fertilizer after blooming to aid recovery, and feed a diluted phosphorus-potassium fertilizer every 10–15 days during the growing season.

💤 Dormancy and Reblooming
In autumn (around September–October), gradually stop watering and fertilizing. Once the leaves yellow, place the pot in a cool, dry spot at 5–10°C (41–50°F) for at least 8 weeks. This cool, dry dormancy is the key to reblooming next year. After dormancy ends, resume watering and move the plant to a bright spot to start a new growth cycle. Don’t dig up the bulb out of impatience—overwinter it in its original pot, and repot into a slightly larger container the following spring.

📝 Summary
Success with amaryllis bulbs comes down to shallow planting and restrained watering: disinfect and trim the bulb, plant it with the top third exposed, water only after the soil dries, keep the leaves after blooming to rebuild the bulb, and give it a cool, dry dormancy each autumn. Get these five steps right, and a single bulb will reward you with dramatic trumpet-shaped blooms year after year.
