Description

🐛 Pest and Disease Control: Watch for Summer Outbreaks
Summer is the peak season for pests and diseases. Common pests include red spider mites, whiteflies, scale insects, and aphids. Red spider mites reproduce rapidly in dry, hot environments, while scale insects hide on the undersides of leaves and can cause yellowing, curling, and even leaf drop.

For control: Imidacloprid granules can be sprinkled on the soil surface at night—pests die after feeding, and the effect lasts about a month. Alternatively, mix about 5 drops of insecticidal emulsion with 1000 ml of water and use it to water the plant, repeating every 10–12 days for three rounds. For scale insects, apply a dedicated spray directly to leaves and branches. For leaf spot disease, which causes brown circular spots that expand and lead to premature leaf drop, fungicides like carbendazim or mancozeb are effective.

🍂 Yellowing and Dropping Leaves: Diagnose the Cause
Yellowing leaves can have several causes. Overwatering is the most common—it causes root rot, so ensure the soil dries completely between waterings. Underwatering can also cause yellowing and drying. Insufficient light leads to poor chlorophyll production; move the plant to a spot with 6–8 hours of direct sun. Fertilizer issues—both too much and too little—can cause yellowing; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leaf growth at the expense of flowers. Environmental stress such as extreme temperatures, low humidity, or strong wind can also trigger leaf drop.

🌱 Propagation: Seeding vs. Cuttings
Seeding is the preferred method if you want a naturally swollen caudex. Soak seeds in 25–30°C water for 24 hours before sowing. Use a sterilized, well-draining mix (fine akadama, perlite, and pumice in equal parts). Place seeds on the surface and press lightly—do not bury deeply. Keep at 28–32°C with high humidity; germination takes 3–7 days. Bottom watering is recommended until true leaves appear.

Cuttings are faster for preserving a specific cultivar, but the resulting plant will not develop a swollen caudex, reducing its ornamental value. Cut a healthy branch, let the cut end dry in a shaded, ventilated spot for 5–7 days until a callus forms, then insert it into dry, gritty soil. Do not water for 2–3 weeks.

📝 Summary
Beyond basic care, desert rose requires attention to seasonal pest outbreaks (especially red spider mites and scale insects in summer), careful diagnosis of leaf yellowing (overwatering is the usual culprit), and choosing the right propagation method (seeding for a beautiful caudex, cuttings for speed). Mastering these specific challenges will help you keep the plant healthy through every stage of its growth.
