When Do Calla Lilies Bloom? Timing, Zones and Cut-Flower Tips

The short answer: calla lilies bloom 60 to 90 days after planting, and each flower stays open for two to three weeks. The longer answer depends on when you planted, which zone you garden in, and whether the rhizome had a chance to size up before it flowered.

Days from planting to first flower

Most garden callas take 8 to 12 weeks. Smaller rhizomes and cooler soil push you toward the long end; a large rhizome in warm soil can flower in seven weeks. The clock starts when the shoot breaks the surface, not the day you planted.

Planted mid-May Flowers mid-July – August
Planted early June Flowers August – September
Planted October (zones 8–11) Flowers April – May the following year

How zone changes the answer

In zones 9–11 callas are effectively evergreen: they flower in spring, rest in the hottest weeks, and often flower again in autumn. In zones 5–7 the season is compressed — one main flush from July into September, then dormancy.

If you garden in a short-season zone, start rhizomes indoors in pots four weeks before your last frost. That buys you most of a month and gets flowers before the nights cool.

Why callas refuse to bloom

Nine times out of ten it is one of these four:

  • Too much shade. They tolerate light shade; deep shade gives leaves only.
  • Too much nitrogen. Lawn fertiliser or rich manure pushes foliage. Switch to a balanced or high-phosphorus feed.
  • An undersized rhizome. Small offsets need a season to bulk up before they flower.
  • Crowding. A clump that has not been divided in four or five years competes with itself.

Making the flowering last longer

Deadhead spent flowers at the base of the stem. This stops the plant putting energy into seed and often triggers a second flush. Keep watering consistently while leaves are green — a dry spell in midsummer can end the season early.

If you want color for a specific event, stagger planting: one batch at your normal date, a second batch three weeks later in pots. The second batch flowers three weeks behind the first.

Cutting callas for a vase

Cut when the spathe has fully unfurled but the spadix is still firm. Use a clean knife and take the stem at an angle. Calla stems are hollow, so use a vase with a narrow neck to stop them flopping, change the water every two days, and re-cut the base each time. Expect 7 to 10 days per stem.

What about the rest of the year?

After flowering, the leaves keep working for weeks. Leave them until they yellow, then cut back. That foliage is what fills the rhizome for next season — cutting it early is the reason a lot of callas flower well once and then never again.

Frequently asked questions

How long do calla lilies take to bloom?

60–90 days from planting, counted from when the shoot emerges. Large rhizomes in warm soil can flower in about seven weeks.

How long does each calla flower last?

Two to three weeks on the plant, and 7–10 days in a vase with the water changed every two days.

Do calla lilies bloom more than once?

In zones 9–11 they often flower twice — spring and again in autumn. In cooler zones you usually get one main flush.

Why are my calla lilies only producing leaves?

Usually shade, excess nitrogen, or an undersized rhizome. Move them into more light and switch to a balanced feed.

If you are choosing a planting date, our calla lily bulbs ship within 1–2 business days, so you can time a batch to whatever window your zone allows.
