Hyacinth Care: How to Grow Fragrant Hyacinths Indoors and in the Garden

Alasines Garden

No other bulb gives you so much fragrance for so little effort. A single hyacinth will scent an entire room, and the same bulb that flowers on a windowsill in January can be grown in the garden like any other spring bulb.

Hyacinths are also the most forgiving bulbs to force indoors, which makes them the classic winter project: plant in fall, forget them in the cold for a few months, and bring them out to bloom on command.

Here is how to grow them both ways.

Hyacinths in the garden

Outdoors, hyacinths follow the same rhythm as any fall-planted bulb. Plant them four to six weeks before the ground freezes, 4–6 inches deep and about 6 inches apart, in full sun or light shade.

One advantage they hold over tulips: hyacinths are generally left alone by deer and rodents, so they can go in the open border without a cage around them. Plant them near a path, a door or a bench — anywhere you pass close enough to catch the scent.

Flowering lasts about two to three weeks in mid-spring, and the flower spikes are so densely packed that they stand up to wind and rain far better than most spring flowers.

Forcing hyacinths indoors

Forcing simply means cooling the bulbs so their internal clock runs ahead of the garden season. From potting to bloom takes roughly 12 to 14 weeks: ten to twelve of those in cool darkness, then two to three in warmth and light.

  1. In fall (September to November), pot bulbs in a container with drainage, tips just above the soil line, set close together but not touching.
  2. Water once, then keep the soil barely moist — damp, never wet.
  3. Move the pot to a cool, dark place at 40–50°F (5–10°C): a garage, a cellar, or the vegetable drawer of a refrigerator. Keep fruit away from them; ripening fruit releases gas that damages flower buds.
  4. After about ten weeks, roots will show at the drainage holes and shoots will be two to three inches tall.
  5. Move the pot into a cool room at around 60–65°F, in bright but indirect light. Too much warmth now gives you floppy stems.
  6. The flowers open in two to three weeks. Rotate the pot every few days so the stems stay upright.

Water culture: hyacinth vases

Hyacinths are one of the few bulbs that grow happily in water alone. A forcing glass holds the bulb just above a pool of water so only the roots touch it. Fill so the water sits just below the base of the bulb — if the bulb itself sits in water, it rots.

Keep it in the same cool, dark conditions for the same ten weeks, top up the water as it drops, then move it into the light. Adding a small piece of charcoal to the water keeps it fresh longer. A rooted hyacinth in a glass makes a clean, green gift that needs nothing but an occasional top-up.

Timing blooms for a date

Count backwards from the date you want flowers. Pot in early October for blooms around New Year, mid-October for mid-January, early November for February. Once hyacinths are in flower, keeping them in a cool room will hold the show for several extra days.

After the flowers fade

Cut the flower spike off at the base so the plant does not set seed, and keep the leaves growing in good light for as long as they stay green. Water and feed lightly.

Bulbs that flowered in the garden can simply be left in place; they will usually return, though the second year is often looser and more natural-looking. Forced bulbs are tired from the effort. Plant them out in the garden after the last frost, in good soil, and give them a full year to recharge. Many will flower again, just not next spring.

Troubleshooting

  • Short stems, flowers buried in the leaves — not enough cold, or the pot was moved into warmth too early. Give forced bulbs the full ten weeks.
  • Soft, rotten bulb — water reached the base of the bulb, or the soil stayed wet in the cold. Keep soil barely moist and water levels below the bulb.
  • Leaves but no flowers — an exhausted bulb. Feed after flowering and plant it outside to recharge; it may flower the year after.
  • Fragrance too strong for a room — hyacinth scent is powerful and some people find it heavy. Place vases in well-ventilated rooms, and keep them out of bedrooms and small offices.
  • Stems lean towards the window — normal. Turn the pot a quarter-turn every few days.
