Hyacinths are grown for scent as much as for colour. A single pot on a doorstep will perfume the whole entrance for a fortnight in early spring, and the dense spikes of star-shaped flowers come in blues, pinks, whites and deep purples that read as almost artificial.
Why grow Hyacinth Bulbs Mixed Colors
No other spring bulb packs that much fragrance into that small a space. Hyacinths also force indoors more easily than almost anything else — a glass, a little water and a cool dark cupboard for a few weeks is all the equipment you need for flowers in January.
How to plant and care for it
Plant bulbs 10 cm deep and 12 cm apart in autumn, in sun or part shade with free-draining soil. For indoor forcing, sit the bulb in a hyacinth glass with the base just touching water, keep it dark and cool at 8–10 °C until roots fill the glass, then bring it into light. Outdoors, leave foliage intact for six weeks after flowering and feed with potash.
