Description

Bred and graded for growing on a windowsill, these amaryllis bulbs need no garden, no cold spell and no special equipment. Plant one in November and you will have trumpet flowers in the house by Christmas — the whole process takes six to eight weeks from pot to petal.

Why grow Amaryllis Bulbs for Indoor Growing

Amaryllis is the only flower bulb that can be forced indoors without a chilling period, which makes it the ideal winter project for flat dwellers, renters or anyone with a north-facing window. It also makes an unusually good gift: the recipient gets a flower show, not a cut bouquet that dies in a week.

How to plant and care for it

Use a pot with drainage, only slightly wider than the bulb, and leave the top third exposed. Water once at planting and then not again until the shoot is 5 cm tall — overwatering before root growth is the number one killer. Keep it warm and bright; a south or west windowsill is ideal. Turn the pot every few days. Once flowering finishes, keep watering and feeding the leaves until they yellow in autumn.
