Iris are the flowers that make a border look designed rather than planted. Each stem carries several buds that open in sequence over two to three weeks, in colours that run from near-black to pale apricot, and the clump gets thicker every year with no interference from you.
Why grow Iris Bulbs
Few perennials are this forgiving. Iris tolerate cold, heat, poor soil and long dry spells, and they flower reliably in their second year and every year after. They are also one of the best cut flowers you can grow — a single stem holds in the vase for a week.
How to plant and care for it
Plant in autumn in full sun, with the rhizome or bulb just below the surface — bearded types want the top of the rhizome exposed to ripen in the sun. Space 25–30 cm apart so air moves between plants. Water in and then leave; established iris dislike being fussed over. Divide clumps every three to four years when the centre starts to go bald.
