Description

Allium ‘Gladiator’ throws a flower head the size of a child’s fist on a stem up to 1.2 m tall — hundreds of tiny star flowers packed into a perfect sphere, in a violet that reads as purple from a distance and metallic up close.

Why grow Gladiator Allium Bulbs

It is the one bulb that solves the gap between late spring and high summer, when the border is green and waiting. Alliums are also untouchable by deer, rabbits and squirrels, drought-proof once planted, and they dry beautifully for indoor arrangements.

How to plant and care for it

Plant bulbs 15 cm deep and 20 cm apart in autumn, in full sun. They need good drainage more than rich soil. The flower heads hold their shape for weeks and can be left standing into winter for structure — the seed heads look good frosted. Leave foliage to die back before cutting. Divide only every four or five years, if at all.
