Bowl lotus is the miniature form of Nelumbo nucifera — the sacred lotus — bred to flower in a pot as small as 25 cm across. From seed, one plant will fill a bowl with round, water-repellent leaves and send up several flowers in its first summer.
Why grow Bowl Lotus Seeds
Most people assume lotus needs a pond. Bowl lotus does not: a sealed pot, some clay soil and standing water is enough, which puts a genuinely exotic flower within reach of a balcony. The seed coat is hard, so germination is the only skill involved — nick it and the rest is easy.
How to plant and care for it
Nick the pointed end of each seed with sandpaper or nail clippers until the inner white shows — without this, water cannot get in and the seed will not sprout. Soak in warm water, changing it daily, until a green shoot appears in one to two weeks. Pot into heavy clay soil in a sealed container, then flood with 5–10 cm of water. Full sun, and top up as it evaporates.
