Mountain turtle plant is the English name for Stephania — so called because the rounded, patterned caudex sits half-buried in the soil like a turtle shell on a hillside. It is a collector’s plant in Asia and increasingly sought after everywhere else.
Why grow Mountain Turtle Plant (Stephania)
The appeal is the silhouette: a single hard, textured dome with a spray of circular leaves rising from the crack at its top. It reads as a bonsai without any wiring or shaping, and it improves for years without needing to be repotted or restyled.
How to plant and care for it
Set the caudex on gritty compost with the bottom third buried and the rest exposed. Bright light, ideally some morning sun. Water when the soil is dry and the tuber has lost a little firmness — that is the plant telling you it is ready. In winter the vine dies back completely; keep the tuber bone dry and wait for the new shoot in spring before watering again.
