A live Adenium obesum with the swollen, sculptural base that makes the species worth growing. The caudex thickens year on year, the branches stay sparse and graphic, and in summer the plant covers itself in pink or red trumpet flowers for weeks at a time.
Why grow Desert Rose Plant (Adenium Obesum)
Desert rose is the rare succulent that earns its place as a specimen rather than a filler. It is also far tougher than it looks: given sun, gritty compost and a dry winter, it will outlive most houseplants and get better with age. This is a plant you keep for twenty years, not a season.
How to plant and care for it
Use a coarse, free-draining mix — at least half grit or pumice — in a pot with a drainage hole. Water thoroughly, then let the soil dry completely before watering again; in winter, once every three to four weeks is plenty. Full sun brings flowers; shade brings leaves only. Keep above 10 °C year round. Repot every second spring, raising the caudex slightly each time to show it off.
