Description

Rain lilies are the flower that rewards you for a thunderstorm. Plant these bulbs once and they come back every summer, then push up a flush of yellow flowers two or three days after rain — sometimes all at once, sometimes in waves from July to October.

What you get

You are buying fresh rain lily bulbs, lifted and graded by hand. Each pack is a single colour so you know exactly what you are planting, and the packs scale from 3 bulbs for a small pot to 15 bulbs for a proper drift.

  • Four shades in this listing: Rain Lily Yellow, Rain Lily Lemon, Rain Lily Golden Yellow and Rain Lily Pale Yellow
  • Bulb size 2–3 cm across, the size that flowers the same season
  • Ships bare-root, ready to plant on arrival
  • Hardy in zones 7–10; lift or pot up in colder zones

How to plant

Choose full sun and soil that drains — rain lilies sulk in wet clay. Set the bulbs with the neck just at soil level, about 3–4 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart. Water once, then leave them alone until you see shoot tips; too much water before growth starts is the one way to lose them.

In pots use a gritty mix (two parts compost to one part perlite) and a container at least 20 cm deep, because these bulbs multiply quickly and resent disturbance.

Getting more flowers

The trick is a dry spell followed by a soak. Let the soil go almost dry for a week or two in midsummer, then water deeply — that swing is what triggers the flush. Feed with a low-nitrogen bulb fertiliser once in spring; too much nitrogen gives leaves and no flowers.

Leaves may die back between flushes. That is normal. Do not cut green leaves off, they are feeding next year’s bulbs.

Pair it with

Rain lilies look best in drifts rather than single clumps. Mix yellow with our other rain lily colours, or read the full rain lily care guide for lifting, dividing and winter storage.
