Description

Green flowers are a botanical oddity that happens to be beautiful. The buds open lime, the outer petals stay green while the centre lightens towards cream, and the whole flower holds that unsettling, slightly unreal colour for weeks — longer than any pink or red in the collection.

Why grow this one

Green peonies are the ones that stop people. There is no other hardy shrub in late spring with genuinely green flowers, and because the petals contain chlorophyll they age far more slowly than coloured ones. A single stem in a vase lasts a fortnight.

How to plant and care for it

Plant bare roots in autumn in light shade to full sun — green forms tolerate a little more shade than pinks without losing colour. Graft union 5 cm below the surface, water in, mulch clear of the stems. These are slow growers; expect two to three years before the first proper flower, and do not cut the woody framework at any point.
