A true yellow tree peony was once a plant only emperors grew. The colour does not exist in the common garden species — it came into cultivation through a handful of rare Chinese and species crosses — and it is still the one collectors ask for first.
Why grow this one
Yellow is the hardest colour to find in a woody peony, and the one that changes a border most. It sits between the spring yellows of forsythia and the summer golds of helenium, filling a gap that nothing else occupies. Because propagation is slow, named yellow forms stay expensive — bare roots are the affordable way in.
How to plant and care for it
Autumn planting in full sun. Yellow forms colour best in open light; in shade they drift towards cream. Graft union 5 cm below soil, water in well, mulch clear of the stems. Feed with a low-nitrogen fertiliser at bud-break — too much nitrogen pushes leaf at the expense of flower. Protect from late frost where possible.
