Description

Two colours in one petal: this is the tree peony that never quite does the same thing twice. Some flowers come out deep crimson with a pink blush at the edge, others open mostly pink with crimson streaks running to the centre, and the odd one is almost solid rose. On a mature shrub you get all three at once, which is why bicolour forms are the ones visitors ask about.

Why grow this one

Bicolour tree peonies are grown from selected wood, not seed, so the pattern holds from year to year — but the balance between the two colours shifts with light and temperature. A cool spring gives more crimson; a warm one pushes the pink. That variability is the point: it is the only peony in the garden that looks different every season.

How to plant and care for it

Plant the bare root in autumn, setting the graft union about 5 cm below soil level in a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat. Full sun, free-draining ground, and space — a mature plant reaches 1.5 m. Water weekly through the first summer, then only in drought. Never cut the woody stems back in autumn: the flowers come on wood made the previous year.
