Description

If you picture a peony without thinking, this is the one you see: full, heavy, rose-pink, with petals packed so tightly the flower holds its shape for a fortnight. It is the most traditional colour in the genus and still the one most people plant first.

Why grow this one

Soft pink is also the most forgiving choice for a new grower. Pale and mid-pink forms are the oldest selections in cultivation, which means they have been tested across climates for centuries. They are vigorous, they hold their flowers in wind better than the very double whites, and they fade gracefully rather than browning.

How to plant and care for it

Autumn planting is best: bare roots settle before winter and flower the following spring. Dig a hole twice the root width, sit the graft union 5 cm below the surface, backfill and water in. Mulch with compost but keep it off the stems. Feed once at bud-break and again after flowering — excess nitrogen gives leaves instead of flowers.
