Description

A blush so pale it reads almost white in morning light, with a ring of golden stamens at the centre doing all the work. This is the tree peony for a white or pastel border, where a deep magenta would fight everything around it.

Why grow this one

Pale tree peonies photograph badly and look superb in person — the opposite of most flowers. The near-translucent petals catch low sun and glow, which is why they suit a spot you walk past in the evening. They are also the easiest to pair: nothing clashes with a blush pink.

How to plant and care for it

Plant in autumn in full sun with free-draining soil. The graft union goes 5 cm below the surface — deeper than a herbaceous peony — so the plant builds its own roots over time. Water through the first summer, then leave it alone. Do not cut the woody framework back; only remove dead wood and spent flower heads.
