Description

The most saturated colour in the peony range, and the one that carries furthest across a garden. From twenty metres it reads as a solid block of colour; up close the petals are veined darker towards the base and the golden stamens sit in a tight ring at the centre.

Why grow this one

Deep-coloured tree peonies hold their colour in heat far better than pale ones, which wash out by the second week. If your garden gets a hot, bright spring, magenta is the choice that still looks like itself on day ten. It also makes the strongest cut flower of the group.

How to plant and care for it

Autumn planting, full sun, free-draining soil. Set the graft 5 cm deep and water in thoroughly. These are vigorous plants — give them room, because a mature shrub is 1.5 m across and resents root competition. Stake only if your site is windy when the flowers open; the stems are woodier than herbaceous peonies and rarely need it.
