Description

Layered like folded tissue paper, this is the heaviest-flowered white in the collection. A single bloom can run to 22 cm across and hold fifty or more petals, which is why the stems need a little more support than the single whites.

Why grow this one

Double whites are the peonies that look manufactured. Nothing in a garden centre comes close, and nothing else in late spring has that density of petal. They are slower to open than singles — which stretches the season — and they last longer in a vase once cut.

How to plant and care for it

Plant in autumn in full sun, graft union 5 cm below the surface. Because the flowers are heavy, choose a spot sheltered from wind; if your site is exposed, a discreet ring support set before the buds open saves the display. Water through establishment, then only in drought. Never cut the woody stems back.
