These iris are rated to USDA zone 3, which means −40 °C, which means they will come back in places where most perennials quietly give up. Plant them once and they will flower every late spring for a decade with nothing more than an annual tidy-up.
Why grow Hardy Iris Bulbs
Cold is rarely what kills iris — wet cold is. These are lifted from stock grown in a hard-winter climate, and they are the type that tolerates freeze-thaw without heaving out of the ground. If you garden somewhere with real winters and heavy soil, this is the iris to start with.
How to plant and care for it
Plant in early autumn so roots establish before the ground freezes. Full sun, free-draining soil, and on clay plant on a slight mound with grit underneath. Mulch the first winter with 5 cm of compost, pulling it back from the rhizome so it does not rot. After that they need nothing. Cut foliage back in late autumn once it has browned.
