Description

Three scarlet stigmas per flower, hand-picked and dried, are what the world pays more for by weight than almost any other spice. Crocus sativus gives you those stigmas in your own garden, from corms planted in late summer that flower within six to eight weeks.

Why grow Saffron Crocus Corms

Saffron is the only spice you can grow on a windowsill and harvest with tweezers. A hundred corms produce roughly a gram of dried saffron in the first year — enough for several paellas — and the patch multiplies, so the harvest grows every season without replanting.

How to plant and care for it

Plant corms 10–15 cm deep and 10 cm apart in late summer, in full sun and very free-draining soil. They flower in October and November, when little else does. Harvest at dawn, pluck the three red stigmas and dry them on paper for a day. Leave the foliage to die back naturally — that is what feeds next year’s corms. Lift and divide every three to four years.
