Description

Stephania erecta is grown for its caudex — a round, crackled, potato-like tuber that sits on the surface of the soil like a small sculpture. From the top of it, thin wiry stems rise and unfold circular, coin-shaped leaves that hang like a curtain of green coins.

Why grow Stephania Erecta Bulb

It is the plant that looks expensive and is not difficult. The caudex stores water, so the plant survives missed waterings; it tolerates ordinary room humidity; and it grows slowly enough that it never needs repotting in a hurry. The one rule is that the tuber must stay above the soil line.

How to plant and care for it

Use a small pot with a gritty, free-draining mix and set the caudex so two-thirds sits above the surface. Bright, indirect light — a few hours of gentle morning sun is ideal. Water only when the soil is dry and the caudex looks slightly less plump. In winter the vine dies back and the plant rests; stop watering almost entirely until new growth appears in spring.

The caudex arrived well cushioned, and with several sprouts. I planted it right away, and the shoots are starting to green up. Very hopeful!
