Stephania cepharantha is a different species from the familiar S. erecta: faster growing, more vigorously vining, with broader heart-shaped leaves and a caudex that swells quickly into a rounded, turtle-like dome. In Asia it is grown as a lucky plant.
Why grow Stephania cepharantha “Lucky Turtle” Bulb
Because cepharantha grows faster than erecta, it is the better choice if you want visible progress rather than a plant that appears to do nothing for months. It also tolerates a little more water and a little less light, which makes it more forgiving in a normal room.
How to plant and care for it
Gritty mix, caudex half to two-thirds exposed, in a pot with drainage. Bright indirect light; it will take more shade than erecta but flowers and colours better with good light. Water when the top of the mix is dry. It climbs readily — give it a small trellis or a cane. Cut back when it yellows and rest it drier, but cepharantha often keeps some foliage through winter.
