Red tulips are the flower most people picture when they think of spring, and this collection covers the whole range: clear bright red for impact, scarlet and crimson for warmth, and a dark wine red that reads almost black in shade. Buy one shade for a clean block of colour, or mix two to keep the border from looking flat.
Heights run roughly 16–24 inches depending on the shade, so they sit comfortably in the middle of a border and cut well. Tulips open in sun and close again towards evening — a spot that catches morning light gives the longest daily show from a kitchen window.
Plant 6–8 inches deep and 4–6 inches apart, pointed end up, in full sun and soil that drains freely. Deep planting keeps the bulbs cool through summer and puts them out of easy reach of squirrels. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8; in mild winter areas chill the bulbs for 6–8 weeks before planting.
