Purple is the colour that makes a spring border look designed. This collection starts at a deep purple that photographs almost black, moves through a saturated violet, and finishes with a soft lavender and a dusty mauve that fade gracefully as the flowers age.
Deep purple and violet hold their colour in flat light, which matters in April. Lavender and mauve are the ones to use in quantity — they blend with pink, white and every shade of green, and they look right in grass as well as in beds. Between them these four shades cover both jobs.
Plant 6–8 inches deep and 4–6 inches apart, pointed end up, in full sun and free-draining soil. Purple pigment is sensitive to strong light and heat; a position with sun until early afternoon keeps the colour deepest. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8.
